Thanks for all the great nominations so far, and thank you to everyone who has clarified their tags in response to these queries!
Apologies for getting this out so late. Some of these tags may already have been updated. If you’re answering here after nominations close, or if you’d rather we update your tags, please link your nominations page.
Updates and PSAs
Small rule update/clarification
We've added a small clarification to the nominations rules. We've had a few fandoms come in without any WB: tags, and fandoms without WB tags at nominations close will be removed from the tagset. WB: tags are required for matching, so you won't be able to complete a sign up without at least one in each fandom.
If you nominate relationships in the relationships slot, we just outright reject those by the way, so please don't do that.
Please don't nominate the "Any/No Characters" or "Original Character(s)" tags
We know many of you have nominated for the past rounds of WB Ex, and since we copied the old mod's rules and guidelines almost exactly we'd like to highlight one specific change we've made which is that no one should nominate Any/No Characters (Fandom) or Original Characters (Fandom) tags because we've figured out how to automate adding those to each fandom after nominations close. If you nominate either of these tags, you'll lose the slot when we reject the tag to prevent duplicates in the tagset.
(Note: you can still nominate more more specific OC tags if you'd like, such as Original Starfleet Captain)
Please add fandom name after your WB: tags and after franchise characters
Adding a fandom name after your tag is known as "disambiguating" (you make the tag less ambiguous!) and we would like to ask everyone to please disambiguate their WB tags, especially the shorter and more general ones. Tags that are the exact same can't be in two different fandoms, so the only way for multiple fandoms to have tags like WB: Religion or WB: Marriage Traditions and so on is if each WB tag is slightly different...and of course the best way to do do that is to stick the fandom name on the end like WB: Religion (Sesame Street) or WB: Marriage Traditions (Dwarf Fortress).
If you go to the landing page for a character (https://archiveofourown.org/tags/[Character]) and the Parent tags box contains more than one fandom, even if they’re related, please disambiguate that character. This is to keep e.g. Luke Skywalker from showing up in all the fandoms he appears in rather than just the one he’s nominated in.
If you have questions about any of this, let us know! And as a carrot to dangle, fandoms nominated with everything disambiguated get approved first (because they’re easier!)
Please continue to email or comment with tagset errors and duplicates you find!
New queries
Inside Out (2015):
- WB: Riley and Jordan's relationship (Inside Out)
- WB: Riley and Meg's relationship (Inside Out)
- WB: Riley dealing with her depression in high school (Inside Out)
- WB: Riley's high school experience (Inside Out)
Thor (Movies)
- WB: What does Laufey believe happened to his son — Nominator, we're not sure we understand this tag - could you clarify how you see it as a worldbuilding idea please?
Moby Dick - Melville
- WB: Unhinged Whale Facts — nominator, were you hoping for more whale "facts" in the style of the novel, or for worldbuilding that takes the existing "facts" as read and extrapolates out from them? Could we approve this as WB: Whale Biology and Behavior as Understood by Ishmael?
- WB: Unhinged Human Facts — we're not sure we understand this tag. Please clarify?
Tenkuu no Escaflowne | The Vision of Escaflowne
- WB: Beastpeople and humans (Escaflowne) — Nominator, do you mean the relationship between beastpeople and humans? Or something else?
呪術廻戦 | Jujutsu Kaisen (Manga)
- Death Paintings (Jujutsu Kaisen)
- WB: Death Paintings
This has been nominated both as a character and as worldbuilding. Are death paintings characters, or objects? If the latter, would it make more sense to nominate it as a worldbuilding tag only? If the former, could you expand on what kind of worldbuilding related to death paintings you are looking for?
Weiß Kreuz
- WB: Tokyo (Weiß Kreuz) - Nominator, could you clarify what you were hoping for from this tag, please, and how Tokyo in this canon differs from the real Tokyo?
Slay the Spire (Video Game)
- WB: Act 4 (Slay the Spire) — We're not sure what this tag means. Nominator, could you please clarify, and spell out what specific worldbuilding aspects you would expect a creator to focus on?
僕のヒーローアカデミア | Boku no Hero Academia | My Hero Academia
- WB: Changes to the Pro Hero System — Could you clarify what sorts of changes you had in mind, please? Are these speculative changes, or changes in the past, or…?
Middle-earth - J. R. R. Tolkien
- This tag was approved in the previous Worldbuilding exchange, but your current moderators are less familiar with Tolkien's works. Nominator(s) of this tag, could you please clarify which parts of canon this covers? Could this fandom be combined with Works, below?
TOLKIEN J. R. R. - Works & Related Fandoms
- WB: Connections between the Middle-earth legendarium & other Tolkien settings/texts (Tolkien Works) — could you clarify this one, please? Which sources and texts are covered by "other"? This sounds like a prompt for scholarly analysis, that is, our-world meta and not in-universe meta. Can you phrase this in a way that suggests a fanfiction, fanart, or in-universe meta response? Could this fandom be combined with Middle-earth, above?
RWBY
- WB: Rouge Huntsmen/Huntresses (RWBY) — is this a typo for “rogue” or do you mean “rouge” (red, cosmetics)?
人渣反派自救系统 - 墨香铜臭 | The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System - Mòxiāng Tóngxiù
- WB: Airplane’s Original Intentions for PIDW (SVSSS) - could you clarify this one, please?
Leverage
- WB Grifters, WB Hitters, WB Thieves — Nominator, could you clarify what you were hoping for here, please? Since these are general terms that cover real-world topics, we'd like help understanding how you specifically want them worldbuilt in the Leverage universe.
Gilmore Girls (TV 2000)
- WB: Jess building his life and finding his way after he left in the s4 finale (Gilmore Girls)
- WB: Lorelai and Rory's summer backpacking through Europe (Gilmore Girls)
- WB: pre-canon Lorelai & baby Rory leaving her parents place
- WB: what happened between the s7 finale and AYITL (Gilmore Girls) — nominator(s), could you please clarify what kinds of worldbuilding you hope these tags will lead to? They seem to be plot and relationship prompts.
Original Work - Fantasy
- Water spirit who finds someone they don't want to drown (Original Work - Fantasy) — this seems to be a story prompt, combining a specific character type and a plot. We are happy to approve 'Water spirit' as a character nomination. If you want a creator to focus on a particular aspect of water spirit culture or water and land-dweller relationships, please nominate worldbuilding topics separately.
- WB: Elven campaign to reclaim human-colonised land (Original Work - Fantasy) — this seems to be a story prompt, combining a specific character type and a plot. Please nominate character types and worldbuilding aspects separately; we're happy to workshop this with you, but a worldbuilding idea that requires a very specific fantasy plot may be out of scope for this exchange.
Original Work - Science Fiction
- Roman-era slave finds alien artifact (OW - Science Fiction) — this seems to be a story prompt, combining a specific character type and a plot. Please nominate character types and worldbuilding aspects separately; we're happy to workshop this with you, but a worldbuilding idea that requires a very specific science fiction plot may be out of scope for this exchange.-
- WB: New planetary colony meets descendents of original colony (OW - Science Fiction) - this seems like a specific plot prompt. Would something like "WB: contact between space colonists of different eras" suit you?
Discworld - Terry Pratchett
- WB: Jade Wants You to Join the Army of Borogravia (Discworld); WB: Jade's Advice for Modern Lady Trolls (Discworld) — These are both seem like specific story prompts rather thannot worldbuilding. Would you be okay with WB: Recruitment to the Army of Borogravia and WB: Etiquette for Modern Lady Trolls - or could you help us understand what you mean instead?
Mayor of Kingstown (TV)
- WB: absolutely anything pre-series; how the McLuskys came to be in command (MoK) — this is a combination of at least two topics. Could you split this into, for example, WB: how the McLuskys came to be in command, and/or WB: history of Kingstown before canon events (or something like that)?
- WB: the relationship between the McLusky brothers (MoK) - nominator, could you please clarify what kinds of worldbuilding you hope this tag will lead to?
Frontier Wolf - Rosemary Sutcliff
- It would help very much if you would put WB: prefixes on your worldbuilding tags.
- By Wolves, do you mean the men of the Ordo, or the actual animals? If the latter, could you please narrow this down to something more specific relating to the novel, such as WB: how the Romans regarded wolves, or WB: how the tradition of hunting the wolf came about in the Frontier Wolves?
The Following
- WB: Ryan Hardy's interim years pre-series but post-catching Joe Carroll (Following) - This seems a little confusing, as catching Joe Carroll is during canon; do you mean: WB: Ryan Hardy’s activities before Joe Carroll escapes from prison?
The Bourne Legacy (2012)
- WB: the hunt for Aaron and Marta post-canon (Bourne) - could you clarify what kinds of worldbuilding you’re hoping for? This seems like a prompt for post-canon fic.
Saiyuki (Anime & Manga)
- WB: Tech Level (Saiyuki) — Can you elaborate on what you're asking for here?
Final Fantasy XIV
- WB: Galvus Family Scandal
- WB: Keeping Up With the Galvii (family drama) - do these two tags refer to the same thing? Can we consolidate?
12 Monkeys (TV)
- WB: post-series life — At first glance, this looks like a prompt for post-canon fanworks rather than a worldbuilding subject. Does something happen at the end of the series that results in a serious change to the setting? If so, it should be specifically mentioned in the tag
Fear Street Trilogy (TV)
- WB: The Goode family deal (Fear Street Trilogy) — would this be better phrased as WB: The Goode Family Deal With Satan? For clarity.
Chronicles of Narnia - All Media Types
- All tags — Nominator, would you be interested in combining with Chronicles of Narnia - C.S. Lewis? We're happy either way, we just want to offer the option in case it will make offering or requesting easier for you.
- WB: stars — We're not 100% sure what you mean! Would a tag like WB: Narnian Stars (Narnia AMT) or WB: Narnian Sky and Astronomy (Narnia AMT) work?

Date: 2023-01-15 05:08 pm (UTC)Ryan is the one who caught Joe 8 years before the show begins, and there's not a lot we know about that time period other than Ryan wrote a book and descended into alcoholism. It's a large period of time that I'm very curious about in-universe!

Date: 2023-01-15 05:17 pm (UTC)Middle-earth - not the nominator, but in exchanges this is usually used to cover any Tolkien text set in Middle-earth (The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion and associated histories). Some characters appear in two or more of these texts and for obvious reasons a lot of the worldbuilding is shared, so it's a useful umbrella for exploring characters and elements that are present throughout the legendarium. "Works and Related Fandoms" would also include things like The Father Christmas Letters, Roverandom, Smith of Wootton Major, etc., which do contain suggestions of connections to Middle-earth, but are not explicitly set there. So I would say no to combining them.
Tolkien's Works and Related Fandoms - I did nominate this one :D the tag (or something very like it) was approved in a previous version of the exchange and it's not about scholarly analysis. It's intended to give the creator carte blanche to explore, in a creative in-universe way, the hints and suggestions of connections between the Middle-earth and non-Middle-earth texts I mention above. Before I nominated it I gave examples of the Western Elven-home alluded to in Roverandom, the appearance of The Man In The Moon across a number of texts, and the Elves in the Father Christmas Letters using Tengwar, the Elvish script from the Middle-earth texts. I suppose I could break it down into more granular ideas for creators to explore, but I was hoping to be able to request and offer it as a broader tag, as there are so many possibilities there and a bit of freedom is fun. (I can almost guarantee that Tolkien fans would have no problem coming up with plausible connections and things to explore in the format of fic, art, or in-universe meta!)
Last time a couple of Tolkien fans chipped in to say that the way I've explained it above is in line with how they'd interpret the tag too, though I can see why to someone not familiar with those texts, it would look like a request for out-of-universe meta.

Date: 2023-01-15 06:30 pm (UTC)I'm the nominator for both the Moby Dick and the Jujutsu Kaisen questions.
For Moby Dick - Yes you could approve it as "WB: Whale Biology and Behavior as Understood by Ishmael" and I'd be happy with either of the example interpretations, honesty.
For 'Unhinged Human Facts', mostly what I meant is - what sort of nonsense understandings of humans might whales related to each other that would be along the same lines. So maybe "WB: Human Biology and Behavior as Understood by Whales"?
for JJK:
The Death Paintings are characters that have a particular unique backstory. There's 9 of them (including Choso, Eso and Kechizu), but 6 of them are just shown in stasis from which we have been told they can't be awakened. I'd like to see more about their creation, early life, and their experiences in stasis (how did they get there, what is it like for them, can they communicate, to what extend are they aware of each other), or potentially what's happening with them now that some of them have been awakened while others essentially can't be.

Date: 2023-01-15 07:27 pm (UTC)For JJK, I'm still not clear on why the character tag and the worldbuilding tag aren't redundant, since the worldbuilding tag implies the death painting characters. Would it be reasonable to apply the other worldbuilding tags to Death Painting characters (in which case, yeah, you'd want that character tag)? Or would it make more sense to be more specific about the worldbuilding tag, e.g. WB: creation and life of Death Paintings?
no subject
Date: 2023-01-15 08:14 pm (UTC)And I see what you mean for JJK - I wasn't thinking about it in that sense. I do think the character tag is redundant and they can stay as a WB tag on their own. You potentially could use them to explore some of the other WB tags but I don't think its necessary.

Date: 2023-01-15 06:38 pm (UTC)The world of SVSSS is an alternate universe of the in-canon novel Proud Immortal Demon Way (PIDW), written by Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky. Airplane ended up selling out and writing a fan-service stallion novel, but there are strong indications in canon that he had planned to write something very different. And since both our main character and the author Airplane himself ended up in the world of his novel, some of those original plans/backstories may be relevant.
(Honestly there are so many worldbuilding opportunities in this book but thinking of tags is hard!)

Date: 2023-01-16 12:04 am (UTC)Riley and Meg’s relationship during and post-series (formerly Riley and Meg's relationship): around halfway through the movie, Riley gets upset about Meg saying that the new hockey player who replaced her is better than her and refuses to talk to her. It’s never mentioned if they make up, either during the canon events or afterward.
Riley dealing with her depression: it’s all but said that Riley has depression, but she never mentions it to her parents (although it’s implied that her parents got the message after her breaking down near the end of the movie. Either lots of things are implied in Inside Out or I’m overthinking it.)

Date: 2023-01-16 02:48 am (UTC)Discworld - Terry Pratchett
Hi, I'm also opalmatrix and these are mine.
I like Jade's voice, and I wanted her to describe what she sees as reasons to join the army post-canon, specifically. So it's worldbuilding for what the army is like now that the commanders have reluctantly included female recruits. At the moment I'm fuzzy in the head on what to do to the title to bring in the fact that it's after the events of Monstrous Regiment.
For the second prompt, Etiquette doesn't quite go far enough? It should be more of a classic advice column than an etiquette column. This would be worldbuilding of the changing nature of troll relationships and family issues post-canon. Maybe Advice for Today's Lady Troll?
no subject
Date: 2023-01-17 07:19 am (UTC)At the end of Monstrous Regiment, we get this line about Jade: Jade and her beau had wandered off to do something more interesting, as trolls very sensibly did - and she isn't mentioned in the scene where Polly and Maladicta march out again. So "Jade's approach to recruiting for the army of Borogravia" doesn't seem like an existing or implied topic to explore. It seems like a perfectly good prompt about Jade's possible future or about the topic of future army recruitment in general, but we would prefer not to lock a creator into answering "What if X, that does not happen in canon, happened?"
Is there a description of something that happens in canon, or is implied to happen in canon, that would work for you instead, so that a creator who matches on that has a range of choices about how to explore that topic? Similarly, Jade obviously has opinions on how female trolls can live their best lives; is there a way of phrasing that topic that allows a creator to explore in more ways than If Jade Wrote An Advice Column?
You can guarantee a Discworld creator gives you a story featuring Jade by making her the only character you select in a request. You can also guarantee yourself in-universe meta for that prompt, if you like, by selecting only that media.

Date: 2023-01-17 10:22 am (UTC)WB: Act 4 (Slay the Spire)
Date: 2023-01-16 05:02 am (UTC)Act 4 of Slay the Spire is a stage of the game that can only be unlocked once you've beaten the game with each of the original playable characters. Act 4 consists of 2 battles against 3 different bosses. I'm interested in everything about Act 4: what is the in-universe explanation for how it's accessed? What are its origins? Who are the bosses? What are their origins? What are the responses of the characters when they initially unlock Act 4, as it will canonically be at least their "second" run through the tower? The Merchant is also a very interesting NPC who shows up on Act 4, so I'd even be curious as to how the character reacts to seeing the Merchant on the floor.
Honestly, I'm open to everything and anything about Act 4, so I'm not sure how to rephrase this. However you want to reframe it is fine by me.

Date: 2023-01-17 05:35 am (UTC)For "beastpeople and humans" I was partially thinking of beatpeople-human relations, but also how beastpeople get along in a city that might have catpeople, birdpeople, and dolphinpeople (for starters), or how they live in less-urbanized areas. "Beastpeople and society" might be better?
